Mental Wellness Program

Dr. Chris is one of the only licensed Naturopathic Doctors in Canada with an expertise in the natural treatment of mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorders, eating disorders, OCD, ADD/ADHD and schizoaffective disorders.

She ensures your health has a solid foundation using Orthomolecular medicine, and builds on this foundation with Homeopathy, Botanical Medicine, Orthomolecular Medicine, Mind-Body Medicine and Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine thereby providing an integrative approach to managing these complex cases.

Dr. Chris is a licensed Naturopathic Doctor in the province of Alberta. Dr. Chris’s primary passion is the integrative treatment of depression, anxiety, bipolar disorders and other mental illnesses. Her treatment program for mood disorders is tailored to each individual. She is familiar with psychiatric medications and can assist patients in integrating them with naturopathic care and/or can help patients discuss how to taper off their medications in consultation with the prescribing physician. She focuses on addressing the underlying causes of mental dis-ease, and empowers patients to effectively treat those deeper concerns using homeopathy and natural medicine.

Dr. Chris has a special interest in the various ways we can use our mind for clinical benefit. Her life-long interest in mind-body medicine has been bolstered with over 20 years of practical and professional training in psychotherapy from numerous sources, including Harvard medical school, Penn State University (positive psychology), Compassion Focussed therapy, Gestalt therapy, Cognitive behavioural Therapy and various meditative traditions and she applies these highly effective methods in treating people suffering with depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety, eating disorders, schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, ADD/ADHD, OCD, PTSD, and many other conditions.

Dr. Chris aims to encourage balance within both the body and the mind. When balance is restored, nature’s own intelligence or “vitality” can work much more efficiently to bring about health. To her, medicine is primarily a process of encouraging or “building health” rather than “fighting disease.” She prefers to think of herself as specializing in creating healthy people, not treating disease.

Dr. Chris focuses on treating mental health issues because she herself has recovered from her own mental health challenges.

Dr. Chris struggled with depression, anxiety and an eating disorder as a teenager and in university, and after many years of suffering she finally found relief with Orthomolecular and Naturopathic medicine. Also, bipolar disorder runs in her family, and she has witnessed the impact it can have when untreated. Finding a method that is not only safe and natural, but in most cases more effective than prescription medications, was inspiring. This experience motivates her to make sure she helps as many people as she can to reach a place of healthy remission.

As a licensed Naturopathic Doctor, Dr. Chris has experience helping patients with a variety of health concerns. She can act as a primary care physician and treat the whole family with a naturopathic approach to primary care.

Dr. Chris grew up in Nanaimo and Richmond, British Columbia, and later studied at the University of British Columbia and the Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine in Toronto. She writes for many magazines (see Blog/Articles), has been a guest panelist on CTV’s Alberta Primetime and is a regular speaker at the Mental Health Regained Public Forum in Vancouver, BC (hosted by the International Schizophrenia Association). When she is not practicing medicine, Dr. Chris enjoys running, triathlons, mountain biking, hiking, and camping with her husband and their son, Noah.
Dr. Chris is available for patient consultations and is also available for classes and public speaking by special arrangement. She can be contacted at 587.521.3595
